Types of Construction Chemicals
Concrete Admixtures (IS 9103)
Chemical additives dosed into the concrete mix to modify performance. PCE (Polycarboxylate Ether) superplasticizers: the current-generation plasticizer for high-strength, self-compacting, and ready-mix concrete — enables water reduction of 25–35% while maintaining workability. SNF (sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde) plasticizers: older generation, lower cost, effective for standard M25–M40 grades. Retarders for hot weather concreting; accelerators for early form-stripping.
Tile Adhesives & Grouts (EN 12004 / IS 15477)
Polymer-modified cementitious adhesives for tile fixing. C1 grade (standard): 0.5 N/mm² bond strength, adequate for interior ceramic wall and floor tiles in dry conditions. C2 grade (improved): 1.0 N/mm² bond strength, required for external tiling, large-format tiles (>30×30cm), heated floors, and areas subject to thermal movement. C2S1/C2S2 grades add deformability for facades. Epoxy grout for chemical-resistant joint filling in industrial environments.
Sealants — Silicone, PU & Polysulfide
Joint sealing compounds for movement joints, facade perimeter sealing, and wet area finishing. Neutral-cure silicone sealant for glazing and aluminium facade joints (±25% movement accommodation). Polyurethane (PU) sealants for concrete-to-concrete expansion joints and floor joints (higher shore hardness, better trafficability). Polysulfide sealants for swimming pools and water-retaining structures.
Waterproofing Systems
Cementitious flexible waterproofing (2-component) for wet areas, terraces, and podium slabs. Crystalline waterproofing: cement-based product that forms calcium-silicate crystals in concrete pores — self-sealing and permanent, suitable for water-retaining structures and basement walls. Polyurethane membrane systems for exposed terrace and podium waterproofing with crack-bridging capability.
Epoxy & Repair Mortars
Two-component epoxy injection resins for structural concrete crack repair (low-viscosity LV for cracks 0.1–0.3mm; high-viscosity HV for cracks above 0.3mm). Polymer-modified repair mortars for concrete spall repair and RCC rehabilitation. Non-shrink cementitious grout for equipment base plates and anchor bolt setting.
